(Kitco News) - While the Super Bowl is an economic behemoth, the dollar value of the actual metal in the trophy is small compared to trophies at other major sporting events.

Last year Front Office Sports estimated that the Super Bowl generated between $234 million and $477 million for the host city Los Angeles.

According to Federico Gay, an analyst at Refinitiv Metals Research, the Vince Lombardi trophy has a melt value of roughly $2,000. The award, created by Tiffany & Co., is made with 3.2 kg of sterling silver.

"While it's widely recognized that the value of a trophy is derived from what it symbolizes in terms of achievement and success, those that follow the NFL may be surprised to learn of its relatively low melt-value compared to other iconic trophies," said Gay.

In comparison, according to Refinativ's research, the FIFA World Cup trophy is worth about $260,000, making it the most valuable sporting award in the world. The World cup contains about 4.93kg of gold. At the same time, the most valuable trophy in the U.S. is the Indy 500 trophy, valued at $42,000.

Of course, the Super Bowl is more than just the battle on the gridiron; it is the most profitable spectacle in the U.S.

According to a consumer survey from the National Retail Federation, 192.9 million adults plan to watch Sunday's game, with 42% saying that the game is the most important aspect of the day.

Meanwhile, 19% of the people watching are in it for the commercials and 18% are just there to watch the halftime show. This year Rihanna will be performing.

The NRF said that according to their research, consumers are expected to spend a total of $16.5 billion, about $85.36 per person, mostly on food for the day.

Spending for Super Bowl Sunday is expected to increase 13% compared to the $14.6 billion spent last year. However, record spending was seen in 2020 and totaling $17.2 billion.
