(Kitco News) - According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), gold production in Peru, one of the world’s largest gold producing countries, was 8,489 kg in December 2022, down 4% compared to 8,838 kg mined in December 2021.
MINEM said that this negative result was primarily due to lower production reported by Compañía Minera Poderosa S.A. (-6.3%), Minera Yanacocha S.R.L. (- 14.0%) and Minera Aurífera Retamas S.A. (-9.6%).
The ministry noted that in December 2022, Minera Aurífera Retamas S.A. (632 kg) and Shahuindo S.A.C. (550 kg) recorded their highest production levels in 2022.
At the company level, Compañía Minera Poderosa S.A. maintained its first position accounting for 9.7% of total gold production in Peru, followed by Minera Yanacocha S.R.L. (7.8%) and Minera Aurífera Retamas S.A. (6.7%).
At the regional level, La Libertad kept the first position accounting for 33.2% of Peru’s total gold production, followed by Cajamarca (20.7%) and Arequipa (19.5%).
