(Kitco News) - Mining company MMG reported today that it has approved, and is progressing, the development of the Kinsevere expansion project at the Kinsevere copper mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The company said the expansion project includes the installation of new facilities and associated processing methodology involving a concentrator plant, roaster system and cobalt processing circuit into which the existing SX-EW plant will be integrated.
Kinsevere is a copper mine located in the Haut-Katanga province about 30 km from Lubumbashi in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mine was acquired by MMG in 2012 and has been in operation since 2007.
The copper is extracted from an open pit, with ground conditions allowing most areas to be mined without blasting. Following plant and grinding mill processing, acid-leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning is used to plate the copper.
Kinsevere continues to deliver production capacity of 45,000-50,000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum.
Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, MMG is a mid-tier, global producer of base metals including copper and zinc. The company is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx: 1208) and operates and develops copper, zinc, gold, silver and lead deposits across Australia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Peru. The major shareholder of the company is China Minmetals.
