(Kitco News) - China's dominance of battery metals can be traced to decisions made last decade, said Steve LeVine, editor of The Electric.
On June 22, 2023, LeVine spoke to Kitco at the 15th Lithium Supply and Battery Raw Materials 2023 in Henderson, Nevada.
The Electric covers next-generation batteries, electric vehicles and autonomous driving.
China has come to dominate the battery metal space. Benchmark Mineral Intelligence forecasts China will produce 69% of the world’s lithium ion batteries by 2030. North America and Europe are now playing catch up.
Early last decade was a turning point for battery metals, noted LeVine.
"South Korea, the United States...they all let go around 2011 or 2012 except for China," said LeVine. "China stuck with it. It was a gamble, and it is paying off for them."
